Black coral is a tree like coral which could be seen in the tropical waters. It got its name from the distinctive black or dark brown color of its skeleton. Also the unique to black coral is tiny spines that cover the surface of the skeleton.
Jewelries made from the black coral are sold at high price in the market. The shiny black surface of the coral gives the beauty of the jewelry. This could be a very romantic gift to your valentine but making jewelries out of black coral could lead to the extinction of the coral. Years ago Maldivian government has banned taking the black coral form the seas of the Maldives due to risk of extinction of the coral. This act has given life to the coral reefs.
Today we see a different picture. Jewelries made from the black coral are independently sold in the tourist shops of the Maldives. Besides stopping the black coral selling the government has started selling the product. It is clearly said in the law black coral is protected marine species and exporting of black coral in any form is prohibited for more information check the link down. http://www.visitmaldives.com/Environment/protected.php
In the National handicraft center located in the S.T.O trade center ground floor many products made from the black coral is on sale. According to the sales personnel of the shop government of the Maldives holds a share to the shop in alliance to Najah of the Najah art palace. Also the sales personnel told me that the black coral is from the Maldives.it is sold with a tag saying “authentic Maldivian product”. Why does the government want to be this on sale? When they are promoting environmental friendly tourism in the Maldives. I don’t think the government understands their own phrase “environmental friendly tourism”. Tell your friends, clients and anybody on this planet to stop this bossiness. After all under water beauty is one of the natural beauties we have.
